I like what you have to say about tents. I'm not a huge winter camper, but I've done survival training in the military and have found that most tents for sale in your average camping section of a Wal-mart or sporting goods store are completely innadequate for winter camping.

Winter camping is less recreational than summer camping, and is more for the serious camper who knows what they are doing.

Great list of things to look for here.

Let's face it. Winter gear is expensive. Here are a couple of tips that save money and will keep you in better shape! As far as gloves are concerned I found that a few pair of cheap thin wool gloves from the army navy store work great as liners, along with a cheap pair of insulated work gloves from the hardware store. Loose them, ruin them, get them wet, buy extras, it doesn't matter cause they are cheap and they will never let you down as far as warmth and comfort. I'm a blue collar worker in upstate NY. I work and and play outside all winter, and camp regurlarly and I never buy fancy gear unless I need to. As for clothing layers... Hunting outer shells are generally of much higher quality then your outer shells that you find at EMS, REI, or other outdoor gear shops and they're the same price or cheaper.

"Your body uses a lot of energy to keep all that waste warm inside you."

This appears absurd.

Unless you are trying to raise a hypothermic core temperature, where the humorous argument would be that peeing slightly reduces your thermal mass - "avoid working to raise the temperature of hypothermic pee". :-P

Just run the loss list. Evaporative: none. Convective: none. Radiant: none. Conductive: none - body is at the same temp. Your bladder can't cool off until you do. Therefore it costs nothing extra to maintain warm.
