If you follow Backcountry.com on Facebook, you’ll know that the Outdoor Retailer show is currently flaunting its stuff in Salt Lake City. Besides giving outdoor folks an excuse to hobnob with industry hotshots and drink real beer, the OR show still manages to do what it does best: showcase new gear and new trends. This year there’s been a lot of buzz about standup paddleboarding.
A few months ago we were taught how to standup paddleboard by Mike Fox, co-founder of paddleboard manufacturer C4 Waterman. We figured the OR show would be a perfect opportunity to learn more.
Before the show even started, the folks from OR held an open-air demo at the Jordanelle reservoir near Park City. Sunny skies and warm temperatures made the Jordanelle look more like Miami beach than a sleepy Utah reservoir.
After meandering through the booths, we caught up with surfing legend Laird Hamilton to talk a little SUP (standup paddleboarding).
Here’s what Hamilton was talking about on Backcountry.com:

June 22, 2010Got this board last year from a local surf shop.
11ft. blue/white
Its very well shaped and is excellent in the lakes for a good core workout.
i surf a lot and when i first got on this thing i thought i would never get the hang of it.
took a few minutes to be able to stand up and get moving along.
its a bit more narrow then the SUP’s coming out on the market today so it take a bit more to balance.
1 word of advice: take it to the ocean where its meant to be. its a killer board on the waves and rides so well.Steep learning curve to get through but once on that side its a beautiful day.
I don’t know about you, but this paddleboarding thing is getting more and more enticing … Great … just what I need … another toy to drop a boatload of cash on (no pun intended).
