The Realcyclist.com Pro Cycling Team has been killing it this season. Not bad for a debut. Need further proof of the team’s winning ways? Check out the vid below and consider this: Mancebo crossed the Stage 5 finish line 20 minutes before predicted. That’s after 100+ miles of grueling climbs and terrifying descents through the rugged Gila Wilderness. Give the man some applause.

Off-Season Training with Steve Smith

Everyone trains differently. No way is the best way, but some ways are better than others. Canadian downhill racing badass Steve Smith broke onto the scene a couple years ago and has been crushing ever since. This didn’t happen on accident; Steve trains long and hard to be this fast. At the World Cup level, riders train all winter and come into the race season in better shape than most people ever achieve. Steve uses with a combination of downhill riding to stay loose and comfortable, sport-specific weight training to stay fit, and enduro riding on his moto to simulate the full-body stress of downhill races. Check out the vid for some training tips and some pretty good riding footy.

Winter mountain biking

Maybe you think mountain biking isn’t a snow sport. HucknRoll writer Dan Hall disagrees. Hall, who used to ride in circles in the basement during the long northeast winters before discovering winter mountain biking, gives the lowdown on what gear you’ll need to get rolling on the snow, from frame to tires, jacket to shoes.

Snow what?

The snow is falling, and you’ve put your road bike in the basement for the winter and pulled out your skis so you can get them ready for the season. When you need a cycling fix or want to start training for next season, you can hop on the trainer, right?

Or, maybe you’re like RealCyclist writer Chaz Boutsikaris, who commutes to work on his bike all winter long. Read More …

Three Reasons: Get a Bike Stand

Bike Stand = Easy Tuning

When it came to making minor adjustments on my bike, for years I had been using my creativity to keep the damn thing upright. I’d strap my mountain bike into my car rack for cleaning, but if it was raining that option was out. I’d turn my road bike upside down to twiddle with a derailleur, but everything seemed to go to hell when I flipped it back over. And I’ve paid my fair share of security deposits for apartment walls that were marked with dirt stains, nicks and dents from leaning an unstable bike. Read More …

Bike Helmet 101 – Good Guide on HucknRoll

Bike Helmet 101Last weekend my girlfriend borrowed my Giro Ionos Cycling Helmet that I wear when I’m getting rad in spandex, so she could take a bike ride around town. Like a douche I said, “Don’t lose it! It’s worth more than your bike.”

What a stupid thing to say.

It made me wonder, “why on earth did that thing cost so much in the first place?” … And then, “why on earth did I just say that?”

Luckily HucknRoll.com bike specialist Dan Hall created a bike helmet 101 guide to help explain the first conundrum. Sadly, he can’t help with the second. Read More …

Pop quiz: What do Alfred Dreyfus, French newspaper L’Equipe, and a yellow jersey have in common?

Answer: the Tour de France

As we rush headlong into July, the bike race that America (even Texas!) cares about is upon us.  The Tour de France will run from July 3 to July 25, 2010, and features some stunning stages. Many viewers don’t pay much attention to the history of the tour, at least not further back than LeMond, so as the resident history dork here, I decided to give you something new to talk about during your July club rides. BCTC08_Fruita_023

The snow is melting, it’s T-shirt weather for the first time in months, and you heard that friend of a friend of a guy who knows a person rode a smooth, tacky trail yesterday, and it was great. Well, it’s time to brush the dust off your mountain bike and get that aluminum steed running smoothly for the upcoming season. Read More …

Road Cycling Introduction

Here I was, standing at the start line with 15 other color-coordinated, leg-shaving, $5,000-bike-riding, muscle-toned Lycra-lovers–about to pedal squares around a transient-filled park in the pissing rain–this was my first road race, and by this point, the butterflies in my stomach had turned to small birds, and the only thing I wanted to do was puke.

If you haven’t read bike-messenger-turned-road-racer Chaz Boutsikaris’s racing article over on RealCyclist, do it. It’s worth your time. Read More …
